There is a role that exists in practice inside every digital business that is performing commercially at the level its investment should produce. It does not have a name yet in most organisations. It is not the CMO. It is not the CTO. It is not the CDO.

It is the person who can read the whole commercial system at once. Who understands how acquisition connects to onboarding connects to product connects to CRM connects to retention connects to the data that feeds back into acquisition. Who can sit in a board meeting and tell the CEO which number is real and which is a reporting artefact. Who can look at a stack of dashboards and tell you what the dashboards are designed not to show you.

I call that role Chief Systems Operator because that is what it is. And the organisations that are building the right one into their commercial architecture are pulling away from the ones still hiring their fifth CMO in four years.
