I want to describe a moment that I recognise in fintech CEO conversations before the person I am talking with has finished describing it, because I have heard it often enough to know its shape.
The metrics look acceptable. Growth is continuing. The investor narrative holds. And the CEO is sitting with a private conviction, not yet articulated clearly even internally, that the commercial architecture underneath all of that is more fragile than the numbers suggest. That the growth is being produced by spend rather than by a compounding commercial system. And that the day the spend slows, the growth will slow with it in a way that will be very difficult to explain as market conditions.
That conviction is not pessimism. It is an accurate read. And the CEO who can acknowledge it clearly, before the moment it is forced by events, is in a meaningfully better position than the one who discovers it during it. I want to have that conversation while there is still time to act on it.
